Google Nexus 6 – After The Buzz, episode 46 (Video)
Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review.
Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.
For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few months later, because everyone’s already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.
So let’s do something about that. Let’s see how we feel about devices when they’re not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.
The thing about acquired tastes is that sometimes, once you acquire them, it’s tough to go back to anything else. Thanks to the fine folks at AT&T, we’ve kept a Nexus 6 demo device in-house at the Pocketnow offices for a while now for comparison purposes – and between review devices, I’ve found myself coming back to it as a surrogate daily driver even more often than my beloved Moto X (2014).
To say this is an unexpected development is an understatement. I’m not a huge fan of “big for big’s sake,” and I wasn’t the Nexus 6’s biggest champion when we reviewed it last December. Yet as weird as its software can be, as inconsistent as the camera is and as clunky as the hardware can feel at times, something about the Nexus 6 just … works for me.
If you’re considering a Nexus, it almost goes without saying that you should wait until the fall at this point. Even if the next-generation devices don’t do it for you, it’s likely the Nexus 6 will see yet another price cut at that time. But if I needed, right now, to pick a tablet-replacement phone that’d last me a while … it’s even more likely than last year that the Nexus 6 would be top my list.
