Google Kicks Off NFC With Business Decals in Portland

Google announced the expansion of its already launched Hotspot and Places local recommendations engine with the addition of a Portland pilot program involving Near Field Communications.

The program will bring Places kits that will contain marketing materials to businesses in the region, together with window stickers reading “Recommended on Google”. Nexus S users will be able to read these decals — since the Nexus S running Android Gingerbread offers NFC support — by making contact between their devices and the stickers, after which they will presented with more information related to that certain business right on their mobile phones. The program will kick off around the date the Nexus S will become available in the U.S., that is December 16.
