Google Hangouts users pushed Messenger for SMS

Are you using Hangouts for text and media messages? You may have to head over to another app soon. And Google has an idea about which app you should use.

After ditching its Messaging app two years ago in favor of said SMS integration with internet-based Hangouts, it looks like Mountain View is beginning to disintegrate SMS from the app.

The app has been updated to version 7 on the Google Play Store. It brings up a first-boot prompt recommending that users “check out Google’s new SMS app,” Messenger.

Similar prompt boxes launched when Hangouts first took in SMS and then when it added Google Voice services. We don’t know for sure if this should be interpreted as a sign of foreboding or if both Hangouts and Messenger can have their cake.
