An old Nexus Player or a new Google Chromecast? Tricky choice for living room entertainment addicts, as the former remains more powerful, but the latter is practically given away for free until January 2.

Not to mention it’s smaller, extremely easy to set up, prettier than its predecessor, and speedier as far as Wi-Fi playback is concerned. Bottom line, the Chromecast 2 felt like a bargain at $35, and if you add complimentary $20 Play Store credit into the equation, it’s a must-buy.

Unfortunately, the Chromecast Audio seems to be excluded from the deal, based on Google’s official terms and conditions. Also, if you pulled the trigger before December 13, you’re probably out of luck. Finally, the bundle promotion appears to be limited to North America, specifically US and Canada, requiring you redeem your freebie in the Chromecast app by January 31.

Then, you have a full year to decide how to spend the 20 bucks, your options being virtually unlimited. Movies, TV shows, music, books, apps and games, you name it, Google Play has it on offer, so it should take you a few minutes to make the call.
