Back in early May, Microsoft released a much-needed update to the Windows Phone YouTube app, adding in a number of anticipated features and going a long way towards giving users the YouTube experience they had long been hoping for. Problem was, Microsoft was pulling this off by doing an end-run on Google and the YouTube API, and Google had to raise the specter of legal action to get Microsoft to rethink its methods. After some tense times, it finally sounded like there would be an amicable end to this all, with Google saying that it would work alongside Microsoft to ensure the app adhered to all its YouTube rules. A few days ago, Microsoft released an updated YouTube app intended to address Google’s concerns, but once again, Google isn’t happy.
Google has gone and blocked this new app, insisting that Microsoft continues to violate the YouTube terms of service.
That doesn’t sound very much like Microsoft and Google have been “working together” at all, and we’re left wondering how communications could have broken down so dramatically after all that public feuding – making neither company look particularly good – just a couple months prior.
Microsoft says that it’s once again working with Google to resolve this issue.
Can’t we all just get along?
Update: Microsoft is not happy about this development and has published a lengthy tirade against the Google practices that led to Microsoft releasing the app as it did.
