LG G2 the latest smartphone to adopt a golden facade

We’re not quite sure how it happened, but sometime in 2013, gold phones went from being something so tasteless that most manufacturers wouldn’t even consider the option, to being a perfectly respectable choice for smartphone owners looking to glam-up their handsets a little. Obviously, Apple had a large part in making gold an acceptable option, and with Samsung and HTC in on the action now too, gold is making its mark on the landscape. Who will be next to walk down this gilded path? New retailer listings reveal it to be LG, with a golden G2 of its own.

Now, before you start freaking out over that screen shot, these are prices in Taiwanese dollars; after conversion, the 32GB model works out to about $560 American, and the 16GB gold G2 is listed at the equivalent of $495. If that’s not driving the point home for you, these are gold colored, not made of actual gold.

Taiwan may be getting these gold G2s, but will anyone else? It’s tricky to say. A little variety at this point might help spice up G2 sales, months after the phone’s release, but LG could easily have its focus set on all-new devices, which could mean putting greater plans for the gold G2 on the back burner. We’ll just have to wait and see.
