Samsung teases round-screened Gear S2 smartwatch ahead of IFA launch

It’s been forever since Samsung came out with a new smartwatch – OK, just about one year. Last August, Samsung introduced the autonomous Gear S with its curved screen. We’ve been anticipating a new smartwatch with a display that’s eye-catching for a whole different reason, as Samsung confirmed plans to release a model with a circular face. Today at Unpacked it gave us a little preview of that wearable, briefly showing off the Gear S2 in advance of a planned IFA launch.

That’s right: this guy’s going to be called the Gear S2, not Gear A as widely rumored. One thing the rumors did get right was that launch date, and specifically how Samsung wasn’t ready to go in-depth with the smartwatch at today’s Unpacked event. Instead, it’s holding the Gear S2 back for IFA, where it will properly announce the wearable in Berlin.

But for today, all we got was a few brief looks at the smartwatch. It sure looks to be rocking a metal body, and from the render you see above, it seems that Samsung’s managed to pull off the circular screen while keeping bezel size relatively small. As it should suffice to say, we’re hugely looking forward to checking this guy out next month.
