The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series is rumored to launch next month, and they will be some of the best and most premium flagships yet from the company. The next-generation of Galaxy high-end devices will feature a design similar to the Galaxy S21 series, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra will borrow more features from the now dead, Galaxy Note series.

When will the Galaxy S22 series launch?

Recent rumors suggest the next-generation of Samsung Galaxy S22 series is going to be announced on February 8, with pre-orders going live a day later, on February 9. The report also claims that shipments will start going out to customers on Thursday, February 24. If the rumor is true, we’re only a few weeks away from seeing some of the most interesting devices this year from Samsung.

How many Galaxy S22 devices are launching?

Like last year, Samsung is expected to announce three new flagships this year, including the standard Galaxy S22, the slightly larger Galaxy S22 Plus, and the highest-end of the bunch, the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

How much is the Galaxy S22 series going to cost?

The next-generation Galaxy S22 series is rumored to cost $100 more than last year’s Galaxy S21 series. Recent rumors suggested the Galaxy S22 could start at $899, Galaxy S22 Plus at $1,099, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra could retail from $1,299. These prices are for the base devices, which will likely come with at least 128GB of storage and at least 8GB of memory.

Will the Galaxy S22 Ultra support the S Pen?

The Galaxy S21 Ultra supported the S Pen by default, but it was an optional accessory that didn’t come bundled with the flagship, and it had to be purchased separately. This year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra is rumored to feature a dedicated S Pen slot. What we know is that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will support the S Pen, which could come bundled with the new flagship, and it’s expected to have lower latency than ever before on any Galaxy S series or Note series.

The Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus flagships will have a near-identical design to the Galaxy S21 series. They are expected to have similar dimensions, they’ll keep the hole-punch cutout, as well as the same camera layout on the back, as well as the display sizes and aspect ratios. It’s also worth mentioning that some other rumors claimed that the devices could be thinner. Button placements are rumored to be the same, and only the rear back panel will see a slight upgrade, or downgrade, depending on your preference.

The back panel on the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus is expected to be matte this time around, and it won’t be as glossy as the S21 series. Some rumors suggested it may be a metal panel, while others claimed they would keep the glass sandwich design and aluminium frame.

Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, will look nothing like the Galaxy S21 or S22 series; instead, it appears to borrow a lot of design cues from the Note 20 series. The phone’s overall design will be more square with curved edges, and it will also have an S Pen slot built into the frame, rather than having an optional case to store it. The camera housing will be gone, and each lens will get a standalone placement, and it will likely require some more care.

Display

The new Galaxy S22 series is rumored to launch with the new Gorilla Glass Victus+ display, likely offering better performance and slightly more protection in case of a drop. In terms of resolution and size, the three devices are expected to come with slightly smaller display panels compared to the 6.2-inch, 6.7-inch, and 6.8-inch display panels on the S21 series, and they could have improved panels to be more power-efficient and show more colors. Reports claimed the Galaxy S22 could have a 6.06-inch panel, and S22 Plus a 6.55-inch.

The previous Galaxy S21 series featured an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, and we expect the Galaxy S22 series to follow suit with the same technology on all three flagship devices. It's not yet clear if Samsung decided to opt for a larger resolution QHD or QHD+ panel for the Galaxy S22 series, or perhaps it keeps it exclusive for the Ultra.

The new Galaxy S22 series is rumored to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in North America, China and India, while the rest of the world will likely receive the new, much anticipated, and much-rumored Exynos 2200 chipset. Some rumors suggested the Galaxy S22 series could launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, but that seems increasingly unlikely to happen.

The Exynos 2200 has been in the rumor mill for over a year, and we heard several reports of it being canceled and delayed. On January 18, Samsung officially unveiled the Exynos 2200 SoC, which supports ray tracing and offers improved performance and power efficiency across the board. Exynos 2200 comes equipped with eight cores, one ARM Cortex X2, three performance Cortex A710, and four Cortex A710 cores. There is also a new NPU to help process images, and Samsung claims to have doubled the performance compared to the Exynos 2100 chipset from the year before. We don’t have the clock speeds at this moment as Samsung doesn’t traditionally share those, so we’ll have to wait and see how well it compares to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and other high-end chipsets on the market.

The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will have the same camera setup on both the front and back, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature different, and better sensors. The S22 and S22 Plus will have a 50MP primary sensor, a 10MP telephoto offering up to 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide. The front-facing selfie camera is rumored to be a 10MP sensor.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra will have a 108MP primary sensor, which will likely be an improved unit compared to last year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra, come with a 10MP telephoto sensor offering 3x optical zoom, and another 10MP telephoto offering 10x optical zoom. There will also be a 12MP ultrawide, the same as on the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus devices, and a 40MP selfie shooter on the front. There were some claims the S22 Ultra could launch with a 200MP Olympus sensor, but that later turned out to be false. Thanks to the new chipsets, Galaxy Ultra will also have a much-improved image and video quality.

Battery

The Galaxy S22 Plus is rumored to have a 4,500 mAh battery, which is 300 mAh smaller than the one in the Galaxy S21 Plus. If Samsung made the devices slightly thinner, we should expect the battery to be slightly smaller in all three flagship devices. The Galaxy S22 will reportedly come with a 3,700 mAh battery. While the smaller battery would mean more frequent charging, Samsung is finally expected to step up its charging game and support 45W fast wired charging, although the wall adapter itself could cost as much as €50 ($56), according to the latest leaks, and it’s very unlikely to be bundled with the devices.

Galaxy S22 series: What we want to see

Last year’s Galaxy S21 series were some of the best Android devices last year, and we expect the Galaxy S22 lineup to offer even better performance, power efficiency, camera quality, and battery endurance, making it a no-brainer for a lot of people. If all the rumors turn out to be true, the next-generation of Galaxy S flagships will offer a new, unique experience, the new Snapdragon and Exynos processors are expected to set a new benchmark for what is possible in such compact devices.

  • We want to see Samsung address some of the overheating concerns, which it has supposedly fixed with the new Exynos 2200 SoC, and the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will reportedly also come with a bunch of power efficiency and performance improvements to the last generation.
  • We would love to see Samsung embrace Dolby Vision and Dolby Sound, but the company never once worked together to support the standard, which is widely supported on other mainstream devices for playing content on the device, and recording with new supported formats.
  • Speaking of the display, it would be great to see the resolution increase to QHD+, while supporting 120Hz refresh rate, although that could have several cutbacks to performance, and it could affect the battery life negatively. However, having the option would offer the best of both worlds for power users.
  • The Galaxy S21 series arrived with a plastic back cover, which is more durable less fragile than glass, but it feels cheaper. When the price of the flagships is higher, we would expect more premium materials such as glass or aluminum.
  • We would also love to see the S Pen supported on even the standard Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus devices; although this is very unlikely to happen.
  • The Galaxy S21 series is known to have great battery performance, and we certainly want to see better and longer endurance.
  • We want to see faster fast charging across the board, and it would be about time for Samsung to embrace 45W fast wired charging as a minimum. Most other OEMs adopted 50W+ fast charging, and companies like OPPO and Xiaomi already offer 100W+ fast charging options.
