Over the last couple of years, in an attempt to (dare we say) capitalize on the success on the phoneless iPod Touch, Samsung has been selling the Galaxy Player, which is essentially a Galaxy S smartphone but without a cellular radio. The 5.0″ and 3.6″ versions are currently on sale at Best Buy and other retails for around $220 and $150 respectively, and there are a couple of in-between models available. The current generation of Galaxy Players are relatively low spec’ed: no dual core processors or high resolution displays, and they all run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Alas, it seems that people are indeed buying these mini budget-friendly tablets, because it look as if there’s a new higher end Galaxy Player on its way. SamMobile has posted specs and imagery of what appears to be the Galaxy Player 5.0’s successor. It has a much larger 5.8″ display (I imagine that for fear of cannabalizing sales of the Galaxy Tab 7, Samsung is disinclined to go much higher than 5.8″), and a design that looks similar to the Galaxy S III, and also of the Galaxy Note 2 Leaks we’ve seen lately. The display’s resolution is pinned at only qHD 960×540, granting it a poor PPI of 189. In terms of specs, the new Galaxy Player has a 1.0GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, plus a 2500mAh battery. It’s running on Android 4.0.4 with Touchwiz.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Galaxy Player 5.8 is the dual front-firing speakers, which are reminiscent of the Galaxy Note 10.1, and perhaps a design note that we’ll see on Samsung devices going forward.
