For some reason, the idea of giving smartphones fingerprint scanners has been all over rumors of upcoming hardware, and the bulk of that focus has been directed towards Apple and Samsung: a fingerprint scanner has long followed rumors of the iPhone 5S, and we saw some leaked software resources from Samsung back in May that sure seemed to imply that it was working to adopt the same technology. Recently, it’s been sounding like all this fingerprint enthusiasm might have hit a snag, upon reports arriving that Apple was running into production issues that might ultimately impact handset availability. As fate would have it, we’re now hearing about the same sort of problem for Samsung.
Supposedly, Samsung had been working towards building a fingerprint scanner into the Galaxy Note III, but has now scrapped its plans. The reason for this change appears to basically be that companies manufacturing fingerprint scanning components simply aren’t ready for the sort of volume required for a major smartphone, and the available supply is just far too unstable to be able to respond to market demands.
We can’t say what any of this will mean for the future – maybe Samsung and Apple will both come up with in-house solutions – but don’t expect fingerprint scanning to suddenly start appearing on phones en masse any time soon.
