As Sony gets ready to bring Android Lollipop to the original Xperia Z, we’ve got updates for classic phones on our mind. As smartphones age, there’s less and less chance of them continuing to receive official updates, and once a couple years pass, ongoing updates seem to be the exception rather than the rule. For owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note II, there’s been hope that Lollipop could still arrive, and late last year we saw one of Samsung’s regional offices mention the possibility. But in the months that have followed, evidence of work towards such a release has been hard to come by. This week, a couple more of those regional Samsung branches are speaking up about the Note II, and what they’ve got to say about its Lollipop update is just a little confusing.

First up we’ve got Samsung Gulf, operating out of the Middle East. In response to a user query on social media, the company states quite clearly that the Note II won’t be getting Lollipop. Disappointing news, sure, but not unthinkable considering the phablet’s age.

But then Samsung Spain responded to a separate inquiry, writing that the Note II should still get Lollipop, but adding the caveat that any release would have to be contingent on nothing going wrong during preparations. While that leaves the update open as a possibility, it also doesn’t make it sound like Samsung’s put much effort as of yet into developing such an update. And if it hasn’t started yet, we can’t imagine odds will get any better as time goes on. For now, it’s still an open question.
