Galaxy Gear smartwatch hands-on (Video)

Every time we hear about a new smartwatch, we find ourselves racing to ask, “is this it? Will this be the one?” And for good reason: for all the innovation we’ve seen in smartwatch designs, and all the variations in hardware and software, there’s yet to be a model that has really ever been much more than a toy for serious tech enthusiasts. It’s that mainstream appeal that’s thus far been elusive.

Coming up to today’s launch event, the Samsung Galaxy Gear sure sounded like it might be the product to finally make the leap to wider audiences, bringing the kind of brand appeal that customers are going to need to get behind an unfamiliar product like a smartwatch. What we ended up hearing was a mixed bag – with some of the watch’s specs living up to the rumors, and others falling seriously short. Is that going to make a big difference in the sort of user experience you can expect from the Galaxy Gear?
