Samsung’s latest Galaxy Gear ad getting more attention than the smartwatch itself

If there’s one thing we associate with Samsung’s incredible success in the smartphone market, it’s the company’s promotional acumen: it has the money to fund effecting advertising campaigns, and generally makes smart decisions about doing so. Perhaps that success is what makes its misses all the more noteworthy, and there’s a new Galaxy Gear spot we just saw published over the weekend that’s getting a lot of attention – though for all the wrong reasons.

Just as the public’s a little apprehensive about Google Glass and the introduction of wearable cameras, the wrist-mounted cam on the Galaxy Gear seems like it could be a sensitive subject for privacy-minded folks. Instead of treading lightly, here Samsung depicts a Gear owner following around a girl he only just met moments ago, and surreptitiously snapping several dozen shots of her.

So, there are some “creepy” overtones at work here, but then Samsung takes things to the next level with some very stilted performances from the actors involved, and hackneyed setups to demonstrate some of the Gear’s features.
