Fitbit reportedly working on a $250 fitness-oriented smartwatch

If we take the launch of the original Pebble into account, this would be second year of the modern smartwatch. You’d assume that, just like in the case of smartphones and mobile tablets, everyone would own a smartwatch by now, right? Well, the reality is actually quite the opposite, where fitness trackers enjoy a significantly larger portion of the market at the moment. Still, that only means that there is a lot of opportunity left in the smartphone space, and one of the biggest names in the fitness tracking industry is planning to address it.

New reports claim that Fitbit is preparing the launch of three new fitness trackers in the next few weeks. Two of these, the Fitbit Charge and the Charge HR will be updates to the existing fitness trackers that we already know, and where the Charge HR will excel by including Fitbit’s PurePulse heart rate monitor. For Fitbit fans this is good news, but the hotter news are found in the third fitness tracker, which is apparently more of a smartwatch. The report claims that this device will be dubbed the Fitbit Surge, and that it will bring all the existing benefits of a traditional Fitbit, but with the added functionality of a display, and even a built-in GPS.

We should learn more details on the Fitbit Surge in the next coming weeks. Hopefully the rumored $250 price tag is just a rumor, but then again, Garmins don’t come cheap anyway.
