Amazon’s practically giving the Fire Phone away

One year ago, Amazon’s first foray into the smartphone business was so full of promise. The Fire Phone had yet to debut, and we were curious to see if the retailer could find the same success with phones as it had with tablets. But as we had the opportunity to start interacting with the phone, putting it through its paces, it quickly became clear that the Fire Phone was an interesting concept, but maybe not one that made sense for a lot of users. We took particular issue with the handset’s steep price, and so we’ve been particularly keyed-in to Fire Phone deals ever since. First the phone hit $200, then $190, and today we catch wind of the best Fire Phone deal yet, as Amazon lets the model go for a scant $160.

“Well, that’s hardly ‘giving it away,’” you protest. Don’t forget that the Fire Phone comes with a year’s access to Amazon Prime, a valuable add-on worth a good $100 on its own. In that light, you’re getting a smartphone for just $60. And with band compatibility for both AT&T and T-Mobile, you’ve got some nice options when it comes to service plans.

Sure, the Fire Phone still has its issues, but when we’re looking at a sticker price this low, forgiving them becomes a whole lot easier.
