Energizer’s Qi-Certified Inductive Charger for iPhone, BlackBerry
Battery powerhouse Energizer (pun somewhat intented) has introduced a new inductive charging pad based on the nascent Qi standard, with the hope that consumers will begin to embrace devices with the technology built-in. For now, Energizer is selling a pair of $35 accessories to make two current smarphones compatible with its October-bound Energizer Inductive Charger, Qi Sleeve for the iPhone 3GS/3G and Qi Door for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 — which as its name suggests, is a replacement for the stock battery door.
Qi is a industry standard governed by the Wireless Power Consortium, which includes co-founder ConvenientPower, big-name regular members like Olympus, Nokia, and RIM, and notable associate members such as Best Buy, Samsung, LG, Sony-Ericsson, and as you might expect, Duracell and Energizer. The consortium confirms that all Qi-branded devices are interoperable, meaning that Energizer’s $90 mat will likely get more functional over time as many of its member companies incorporate the technology directly into their products.
