Elite: Dangerous development now focused on SteamVR and the HTC Vive
You know how bad the hype is for the HTC Vive? You really want to know? Well, you may be familiar with Frontier Developments’ big first-person space simulator, Elite: Dangerous. It’s in the process of dawdling its way over to Oculus Rift right now. We say dawdling because the Frontier has admitted to putting its main labor engines on getting its immersive PC game translated to SteamVR.
A statement from the company reads:
We’ve supported VR for a few years now, and Elite Dangerous is arguably the world’s leading VR-ready game. We want to give players the best possible VR experience however they play […] and that means focusing our efforts. Right now, we’ve chosen to focus on SteamVR. We haven’t cut an exclusivity deal with any VR manufacturer, and we’re still working with Oculus on Rift support.
Elite: Dangerous was first demonstrated on the Oculus 0.6 SDK, still the only SDK the game currently runs on.
So, we’re assured the game’s coming to Oculus alright, but will it get to the Valve-associated HTC Vive first?
