For many of us, the front-facing cameras on our smartphones are somewhat of an afterthought. Sure, we like that they’re there for that rare occasion when someone wants to video chat or we need to snap a new profile picture, but other than making sure that smartphones we’re shopping for include the feature, we rarely get too concerned about specs. After all, the megapixel count for your phone’s main camera is going to make a larger impact on use than just how high-res the front-facer is. Nevertheless, today we’re hearing about a bunch of Androids that may offer eight-megapixel front-facing cameras.

First up are two i-mobile phones, the IQ X and IQ XA. With largely disappointing specs (1GB RAM, MediaTek SoCs, 4GB flash) we’d otherwise not give pair a second look, but both phones are supposed to feature 18-megapixel main cameras with 8-megapixel front-facers (above).

However, there’s a fair chance that the actual hardware could come up short; i-mobile has fudged numbers in the past, claiming that a five-megapixel shooter was producing eight-megapixel shots. We’ll just have to wait and see if these two can actually deliver on their promises.

Then there’s a new model from Oppo, where a future entry in its Find lineup could not only get a Snapdragon 800, but also see its front camera upgraded to eight megapixels. Other rumored specs include 2GB of RAM, 32GB flash, and a 13-megapixel main camera.

Finally, there’s the MeituKiss HD. News of this one broke a few days ago, and while there are some unfortunate specs in-line with those i-mobile models, it has a pair of eight-megapixel cameras, one front and one back.

Don’t be surprised if you start seeing high-res front-facing cameras on smartphones from some more major manufacturers over the course of the next year.
