Are you ready for dual-battery smartphones? Gionee sure is
When it comes to smartphone hardware, sometimes manufacturers just can’t be content to let handsets get by with only one of something. We’ve seen phones with dual cameras, dual SIM cards, and even dual screens. Now the next component that’s ready to be doubled down on could be nearly upon us, as Gionee teases a phone that offers users a pair of dual batteries.
This teaser image for the Gionee M5 recently surfaced on Chinese social media and mentions the presence of dual batteries. While we don’t have many specifics on the hardware just yet, including the actual capacity of these batteries, the manufacturer claims users could expect to see up to four days of operation on a charge.
That sounds very promising, but with an ambitious undertaking like this, the devil’s in the details: will the M5 be incredibly thick, or otherwise awkwardly constructed to make room for both batteries? How convenient will it be to swap one out while the other’s still powering the phone? And just how will they attach: side-by-side, or maybe even stacking somehow, so that the phone’s a little thinner with only one in play? There are a lot of ways Gionee could do this, and we’ll want to wait to check out its ultimate implementation before we pass judgment.
