Droid RAZR HD video sample

As part of our reviews we like to run smartphones through a video test to see what kind of quality we can expect from its camera. One of the first things to note about the Motorola Droid RAZR HD is that it comes preset to shoot video at a full 1080P HD resolution. Most of the phones we see these days are “capable” of 1080P, but many of them are set to record at 720P out of the box.

720P is usually the default, not so with the RAZR HD

Most users won’t bother to bump up the resolution to 1080P like we do, which makes us wonder why manufacturers don’t set the camera to full-HD as the default. It could be storage limitations or possibly processor considerations. After all, who wants to see dropped frames and audio that skips in the videos we shoot from our phones, right? It stands to reason that device makers would scale back their video resolution to ensure that clips are smooth and still high quality all the time.

If that’s the case, it should be particularly noteworthy that Motorola is apparently confident enough in the Droid RAZR HD that they set the recording quality to full 1080P as the default.

How does it look?

I braved the brisk Autumn morning and took the Droid RAZR HD outside for a quick video test.

Holding the camera at approximately 1/2 arm’s length I shot some details (flowers are good for that), as well as some other types of shots that you’d normally expect from a smartphone user to shoot.

How did it turn out? Hit play, crank the quality up to 1080P, and let us know what you think in the comments!
