Cyanogen teases secret project; just what could it be?

Cyanogen has been taking some big steps ever since the group formally incorporated itself and graduated from being some custom ROM enthusiasts to a company doing business with some major manufacturers. That’s led to devices like the Oppo N1, OnePlus One, and Yu Yureka. As we wait to see what’s next from Cyanogen, it’s teasing a mysterious project on social media – so what could it be?

The above image arrived this afternoon alongside the note “Cooking up something new in the lab” with the hashtags “EarlyStages” and “TopSecret.”

What’s the focus supposed to be here? The software? We already know that the latest nightlies are based on Android 5.1, as seen here, so that may not be it. But what about that blurred-out model number? Is the real secret the hardware running this build?

While big dev boards like the one in the background here are common, we don’t quite recognize this particular one, and the blurred-out label on the board itself may suggest that it’s the actual top-secret bit.

Does that mean a new OEM partner for Cyanogen? Maybe a full-on Cyanogen-branded handset? For now, your guess is as good as ours, but we’re quite interested in seeing how this ultimately plays out.
