Call Recording Made Easy for Android Users with Root

By Joe Levi October 21, 2010, 6:30 pm

If you've wanted to be able to record your cellular phone calls without that odd, stethoscope-style suction-cup-to-mini-recorder contraption that you picked up in the 80's, you're in luck!

If you're an Android user with root access, head over to this thread at XDA-Developers and grab the .apk!

Since this app gets down to the driver level to record both sides of the conversation, you've got to have root. Also, unless you want to always give it root permission, you'll probably want to run a chmod command, but the XDA thread has instructions on how to do this.

The app lets you configure lots of stuff, like recording format (WAV versus MP3), what calls to record (all incoming calls, those not in contacts, outgoing calls, etc.), and other things that you'll find useful.

Sure, you're thinking "doesn't Google Voice let me do this already?" Yup, it does, but only for incoming calls, and only after it announces that call recording is on. This app lets you record both incoming and/or outgoing calls without that pesky announcement.

Fair warning: in some locations it's illegal to record a phone call without both parties knowing that it's being recorded, in others only one party needs to know. Over here at pocketnow.com we're not lawyers, so if you don't know for sure, you'd best consult one, just to make sure you're not going to end up reading our articles from behind bars.
