Ballmer: Nadella needs “clear path forward” for Windows 10 Mobile

In a wide-ranging interview with Business Insider, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave his perspective on how his former homebase is faring. As the company’s largest individual shareholder, he’s been disappointed with the lack of information about revenues from cloud services as competition from Amazon in particular has been stiffening.

Ballmer does think that Microsoft’s hardware projects like Surface, Xbox and HoloLens are great steps in that robust devices are needed to serve as the interface to and from the cloud. He also praised the company for its effort to drive its software across platforms.

But Ballmer wants concrete action on the mobile side.

If you’re going to be “mobile-first, cloud-first,” you really do need to have a sense of what you’re doing in mobile devices. I had put the company on a path. The board as I was leaving took the company on a path by buying Nokia, they kind of went ahead with that after I told them I was going to go. The company, between me and the board, had taken that sort of view. Satya, he’s certainly changed that. He needs to have a clear path forward. But I’m sure he’ll get there.

Whatever that path leads to and what it hits along the way, we’re trying to find out. Hardware-wise, the ending of Lumia 850 work in favor of a Lumia 650 and Lumia 650 XL pair could just be a palette cleanser up to whatever this Panos Phone is.

However much influence Ballmer has at Microsoft as an external factor can’t seem to be measured, but being a shareholder, his prerogative can be a little more pointed. He sees Nadella four or five times a year.

“Either to brainstorm something or just as a shareholder, we’ll sit down and chat. That’s always quite helpful for me and hopefully him in terms of thinking things through.”
