After checking out the sub-$200 Acer Iconia B1 early this morning, budget-priced tablets are on our mind. We just caught wind of another one that at least seems like it could be one of the most affordable models around, but then why is it being attached to such a comparatively steep sicker price?

The ASUS ME172V sure looks a lot like the Nexus 7, with a very similarly textured rear panel. Because of the Nexus 7, we know that ASUS can make a decent tablet that’s still affordable, but the ME172V doesn’t deliver the same kind of specs, yet is listing for what works out to around $225.

Maybe that price would be OK if it at least came close to matching its cousin’s hardware, but the ME172V runs an 800MHz Soc, and though it keeps a seven-inch screen, it shrinks that resolution down to 1024×600. At least the tablet runs Jelly Bean and has 16GB of onboard storage, but that’s not going to be enough to save it at these prices. Maybe if we were talking $150, like we heard rumored for another ASUS model, things would be different, but it’s hard to get excited about the ME172V at this price.
