Apple Watch retail training marks a complete overhaul for Apple Stores

Apple is not only embarking on a new category with the Apple Watch, but it’s also trying to succeed in a market that hasn’t been able to take off. As such, we’ve seen the company hire an immense amount of experts from the fashion industry in order to develop the right angle for how to sell its new wearable. The company that was once famous for its laid-back Apple Store sales approach is about to change everything with the Apple Watch.

Leaked insider information on how Apple Store employees are being trained over the next few weeks shows us that the new sales approach will dramatically focus on fashion. Apple Store employees in the past were just fine with being geeks like you and me, since hey, all they sold were computers, phones and other gadgets with very limited color options. The new leaks show us that employees are being trained to assess the current style of the customer that arrives interested in an Apple Watch, and that the idea is to create a close relationship with the customer, understand his or her needs, and suggest a product based on select variables. If all this sounds familiar, it’s because this is the same approach fashion stores use to sell expensive products.

The training is specific in focusing on positive responses, like “you seem to have a fun style. I think the Pink Sport band would match your style perfectly,” or “the white strap looks great on you.” Negative connotations like “that doesn’t look good on you” should be avoided, and Apple Store employees are also urged to never suggest a specific model based on price, as consumers may be willing to spend more on something that makes them feel better.

Apple Watch sales are also considered to be a huge opportunity for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus upgrades according to the leaks, and that is also something crucial to the training being given to employees. We should learn more about Apple’s new strategy, as we get closer to April 10th.
