Apple Watch estimates reveal unit sales and crazy margins for watch bands

So far Apple has not provided the media with any solid sales figures for the Apple Watch. Tim Cook hasn’t gone further than expressing that he’s “thrilled” with the popularity of the watch, and we assume that sales figures aren’t at their best with the current retail strategy. Today we get some estimates backed up by solid data, and we also get cost estimates that would make anyone cringe.

Slice Intelligence has just revealed a study that’s based on scanning the email inboxes of more than 2M panel members. It reveals that in the US alone, Apple has sold 2.7 million Apple Watch units, a number which sounds reasonable given KGI’s recent world analysis, but still around 20% down from original estimates. Reasons for this could be due to how long it took for Apple to meet demand, which made even some of us on the Pocketnow team to desist acquiring one.

A true shocker came with the watch band estimates though. It seems that building a 38mm sports band only costs Apple a crazy $2.05 to make, compared to the $49 charges for it. Obviously marketing, design, packing and shipping figures aren’t accounted for, so this number is not so realistic. Slice reveals that 17% of users opted to acquire a second watch band, and that the black sports band an the Milanese Loop band are the most popular among users.

We should learn more about some true Apple Watch sales figures with the company’s next quarter results conference call.
