Apple Maps Outperforms Google Maps in Navigation Test

Apple Maps in iOS 6 got off to just about the roughest start imaginable, and though Apple has committed itself to ongoing work to improve upon Maps, the launch of a stand-alone Google Maps for iOS no doubt stole away whole swaths of users. Apple’s had a lot of time since its Maps first launch, so has it really managed to get better. In some situations, it just might be the map to beat, at least according to a recent informal test conducted by John C. Dvorak.

The challenge pitched Dvorak against two other drivers, using Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze to navigate around the Bay Area while making a number of stops. While there wasn’t any sort of complicated system to evaluate navigation performance, the car using Apple Maps arrived at its destination a good five minutes ahead of the other drivers, and Dvorak noticed some specific instances where Google’s directions were incorrect.

This is far from a scientific evaluation, but the take-away is something worth remembering: for all the flak it gets, sometimes Apple Maps really might be your best option.
