There is more distance between today and the Apple car that may be in our future. But the company has decided to take down its immediate ambitions and start from the ground up.

Bloomberg is reporting from its sources that the 1,000-member crew working on what’s internally called Project Titan has come across high turnover in the past few months. Hundreds of software and hardware engineers have been cut from the team. Employees were reassigned, sacked or they quit. New hires have kept staffing nearly level and they’re now focused on a new directive.

Instead of a car, Apple is supposedly now working on a new autonomous vehicle software system it can vend to other automakers. The company will evaluate feasibility of whatever testing the project team will do late next year.

The reason for the shift? Distress in leadership and a supply chain that’s hard to tame. There have been three project leads for Titan since late last year and no clear direction for how an actual product would be manifest for whatever purposes it is supposed to fulfill.
