Angry Birds Getting Cross-Platform Saved Game Sync

By Stephen Schenck April 13, 2011, 5:27 pm

With Angry Birds on its way to Windows Phone 7, the extent of Rovio's reach over smartphone gaming is nearly total, with BlackBerry the most notable holdout. Perhaps recognizing that big fans of the game will likely end up playing it on multiple smartphones as they upgrade to new devices, and even on multiple platforms, Rovio has decided to introduce global cross-platform game status syncing, allowing you to pick up from where you left off regardless of what smartphone you're using.

This represents an ambitious plan for Rovio, taking a game that's played locally and introducing a cloud-connectivity element, so your scores, progress, and unlocked extras will carry over from phone to phone. Since that means linking up games played on Android with the iPhone and Windows Phone 7, none of the platform-exclusive ID systems, whether that's an iTunes account or a Windows Live username, represent a clear choice for how to identify yourself with Rovio. It may end up easier for the company to register users under a system of its own.

Supposedly, this new functionality will be here before the start of summer. Who knows, depending on the progress Rovio makes, it might even be ready in time for the WP7 release at the end of May.
