Octopus, Alipay, Apple Pay, now what? Android Pay? It seems that Google has gone with its wits to bring its mobile payments system over to Hong Kong.

You can now put in your Mastercard or Visa card into Android Pay from any of the following banks:

  • BEA
  • Dah Sing Bank
  • DBS
  • Hang Seng Bank
  • HSBC
  • Standard Chartered

Over 5,000 stores have NFC terminals nowadays, including ones with chains such as 7-Eleven, PARKnSHOP, Maxim and Chou Sang Sang. Android Pay users can also hit up online boutiques like Snaptee and Kaligo.com and more coming soon.

Android Pay has plenty of competition from startups, cell carriers and established tech companies from inside mainland China and, yes, the Apple and PayPal types. Nevermind the fact that RFID solution Octopus Card has had a near-20 year advantage over everyone else, initially serving as the instant turnstile pass for the Mass Transit Railway before finding acceptance at convenience stores, restaurants and other transit modes.

It’s gonna be a tight fight from here.
