You knew this discussion was coming: with yesterday’s formal launch of Android 4.3, all you Android users with non-Nexus devices are wondering both if your hardware will be seeing 4.3 updates of its own, and when such updates might actually become available. It’s still quite early, so not everyone’s talking, or even giving much detail, but we have heard from a few OEMs about what they’ve been thinking.
Let’s start with a company that’s actually committing to something: Sony has confirmed that it will release Android 4.3 updates for its Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, and Xperia Z Ultra. That’s not necessarily an exhaustive list, and Sony also said that it’s thinking about bringing 4.3 to some of its Androids that are still stuck on 4.1.
Samsung falls short of Sony when it comes to specifics, but the company’s UK branch was able to confirm plans for “selected Galaxy devices in the coming months” to receive Android 4.3 updates.
HTC is at least talking about Android 4.3, but gives us the very least to go on concerning its update plans. All the company has been willing to say thus far is that it’s “reviewing Android 4.3 to see how this update fits into our plans.”
