Android 4.1.2 Hits AOSP, Nexus 7 Updates Arriving

We may have Android 4.2 on the brain today, wondering about what features Google might pack into the next major Android release as we look into the future, but for those of you living in the here-and-now, we’ve just learned that Android 4.1.2 is on its way to the Android Open Source Project, and an update is already creeping out for the Nexus 7.

Google’s Jean-Baptiste Queru broke the news on Google Groups, calling 4.1.2 a minor update. While he didn’t go into detail on the changes, users who have seen the update arrive for their Nexus 7 tablets have been able to fill us in on some of what’s new. The update notification mentions performance enhancements, stability improvements, and a number of bugfixes. The most visible change, though, is that the tablet now supports homescreen rotation, letting you quickly switch over to a landscape view.

Queru also mentions a small change in the works for Nexus 7 hardware that will require Android 4.1.2 to function; the tablet’s getting a new power management chip. There’s no word on any specific benefits it offers, so this may just be a matter of switching suppliers.

Expect a more thorough look into Android 4.1.2 changes once the source has had a opportunity to be looked through.
