Amazon smartphone hardware details, launch window outlined by analyst

By Stephen Schenck March 20, 2014, 11:42 am

After dropping off the radar for several months, last week news of Amazon’s first smartphone found itself back on our radar, picking up the name “Project Aria” and getting pegged by rumors as being in the works for a release later this year. It was nice to get an update suggesting that the project was still moving forward, but what about the details? Were some of those crazy features like a multi-camera gesture tracking system still in the running? And could we maybe narrow-down that release window a little bit? Today we hear from an industry analyst who believes he has this Amazon handset figured out.

For starters, we’re probably looking at a launch this summer, with the phone going public in the next three to six months. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo takes a close look at possible component suppliers, and identifies six cameras Amazon is looking to use for the phone: a 13MP main camera, 2MP front facer, and four VGA-resolution sensors for gesture tracking (just as depicted in that patent).

The phone is looking like it might run a Snapdragon 801, and could feature a 4.7-inch 720p panel. Battery size is still up in the air at this point, but may fall in the 2000 to 2400mAh range. All told, Amazon could be preparing to sell something like two to three million of these handsets before the end of the year.
