Amazon Smartphone Rumors Return With New Hardware, Launch Info

Where are we now with rumors of an Amazon smartphone? There was a lull for a couple months, but we started hearing some new chatter a little earlier in March, looking at the idea that Amazon could be ready to start selling its phone in the second half of the year, following manufacturing not really getting started until June. Now a new rumor is out, suggesting a possibly revised timetable, as well as tackling one of the phone’s hardware specs.

That’s important, because throughout all this, specific hardware details have been sorely lacking. Supposedly, Amazon has scrapped plans for a 4.3-inch display after observing consumer attitudes showing a preference for devices with 4.7-inch screens. We’d have to agree with that assessment, and now Amazon may move forward with plans for a larger handset. As for resolution, we’re still in the dark, but 720p sounds necessary for the phone to really be competitive.

Despite those earlier accounts claiming that Amazon wouldn’t even be able to produce the phone in significant quantities until June, this rumor says that the company is hoping to release the phone in the second quarter. To be fair, sources admit that delays in manufacturing may prevent that from actually happening, so maybe a third quarter launch would be more realistic.
