Alcatel Idol 4S pre-orders in US up on July 15 at $350

The phone comes inside a VR headset. What more can you ask for? Well, a lot, and we’re finally able to tell you a lot about the Alcatel Idol 4S. It’s a rather powerful mid-range phone that we’ve been waiting for since MWC and after some delay, it’s finally ready for sale in the US.

Not much has changed since our hands-on in February, including its Gothic and glassy build. It comes in any color you’d like, as long as it’s dark gray. You’ll find some reserved, but powerful 3.6W front-facing stereo speakers tuned by Waves Audio and certified by JBL, delivering some Hi-Fi noise to your lugs. And yes, as with last year’s Idol 3, the symmetrical design will allow you to use the phone rightside up or upside down. Sideways, too, but that’s another story.

In addition to the typical power and volume keys, you’ve got a “Boom Key” that’s a quick trigger for some pretty neat features like pumping up the bass on the speakers, acting as a camera shutter key, even starting a livestream while you’re shooting video. All that and it can be assigned to pull up any app you want. Pretty smart stuff.

The design and feature upgrades mark a revision in Alcatel’s target market. The list price of the Idol 4S is $399.99, some $150 more than what the 5.5-inch version of the Idol 3 cost at launch.

But if you’re interested in the phone, you can pre-order it at Alcatel’s website beginning Friday at 11am Eastern for $349.99 instead. Financing is available via Affirm. Shipping — which will be provided for free — starts around August 3, when sales officially start.

Speaking of boxes, the pre-order bundles feature the phone laid on top of a VR headset (with neat-o strap included) as well as some JBL earbuds, an Insipio case and a screen protector. The pre-loaded Littlstar will provide VR content for you to browse.

No word just yet on when the Idol 4 will make it in the US, if at all.
