Being on call can be a tricky situation for doctors. You often have to take calls for other doctors’ patients and you may be on call when paper records aren’t easily availalble. The risk of prescribing the wrong treatment and the risk of issuing drugs to abusers taking advantage of the lack of availablity of records is great.
Enter StarMobile, Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Internet-based electronic medical record system. StarMobile allows doctors to read the complete medical records of every one of his [...]

HP recently posted a new ROM upgrade for HP iPAQ 545x Pocket PCs. After a flurry of downloads and a barrage of questions from users, HP removed the update page from the site. Sources at HP say that the reason the page was removed was because the ROM update does not include all the current RAM patches and that led to a fair bit of confusion on the part of end-users. An internal debate is going on at HP as this is written as to whether all the RAM patches will be integrated into a new release which will then be posted or whether HP will simply [...]
“The PlexWriter Premium can pack 980MB of data into a 700MB (80-minute) disc and 1.2GB into an 880MB (99-minute) disc, according to the CD gear maker. It does so using the GigaRec option in the bundled PlexTools Professional software, working with the drive’s hardware.”
The way the new Plextor drive works is that it makes the ‘pits’ that it burns into the cd, using the laser, much smaller, thus creating more room for more pits.
This may not work on standard CD players, however, and may require a special hardware [...]

The Pocket PC group is considered an internal customer of Microsoft’s Windows CE so the group can take advantage of Microsoft’s open source code, but licensees of Pocket PC OS cannot. That’s the word from a source at Microsoft according to Tony Smith of the Register.
Unfortunately, that changes a lot of the possibilities that were forseen when Microsoft first announced the opening of Windows CE code. It means that Pocket PC hardware developers will not be able to write enhancements directly into the operating system like Windows CE [...]

Previously, Microsoft’s licensing of Windows CE allowed developers to modify the code they were given, but kept the core program code under wraps. Recently, Microsoft decided to change that. With the new licensing plan, developers will have access to much more of the Windows CE source code and can still modify it to suit their needs. However, code designed to enhance the performance of Windows CE and not merely to differentiate Windows CE products from others becomes the property of Microsoft (royalty-free) after a period of six months.

This week, the largest annual conference of experts in the field of human-computer interaction took place in Florida. Much of the projects discussed were directly related to handhelds. These are some of the highlights:

A report from eTForecasts suggests that devices running Windows CE have the potential to outsell Windows PCs by 2010. Windows CE is the operating system that powers Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs, but it is also found in TV set top boxes, remote displays, SmartPhones, and even in the military’s new “Phraselator.”
It’s the “depth of field” that allows this to happen. The variety of devices that will have Windows CE built-in is much wider than the desktop PC market and it’s growing constantly. It will take a while [...]

The TCG includes five founding members (AMD, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel and Microsoft), all part of the TCPA. Ten other companies, including Nokia, Phoenix Technologies and Sony, have already joined. The work of the TCPA was primarily to create a series of standards for secure computing. PalmSoft has spent months of development to create an emulator which runs Pocket PC OS on a Palm device. The PPC Emulator runs Pocket PC programs, including ROM-based ones. It requires Palm OS 5.x and a ROM image from a Pocket PC to function, but ROM images are available at various sites. There are no known bugs, but one limitation. Due to the constraints of the Palm OS, it can only run one program at a time and will not run programs that use background threads.
For more enlightenment, check the “source link” above. Yes, this was [...]
