“A small US firm, Hop-On, has won regulatory approval to sell the first throwaway prepaid mobile phone.”
What a great idea. Users will be able to buy these cell phones in 60, 90, and 120 minute versions. After you are finished using it, you can throw it away and receive a $5.00 rebate.
This device is only being launched in the US right now, starting in Southern California and progressing north and eastward.

After long months of debating whether they would or wouldn’t officially introduce the Jornada 928 WDA and while the merger process went through, HP finally decided to go ahead with it. The reason for the debate was that HP had decided to pursue the iPAQ Pocket PC line after the merger. That makes the 928 one of the last products in HP’s Jornada line. (The Jornada 728 Handheld PC being the other.)
The Jornada 928 WDA is a full-color wireless digital assistant based on the Pocket PC 2002, Phone Edition platform. The device [...]

“A vast horde of alien battleships is approaching our solar system. Due to maintenance problems only one fighter craft is ready to defend the planet. Fly dangerous missions against huge battlecruisers, dogfight with enemy fighters in asteroid fields and destroy the alien fleet before it enslaves Earth. Can you face them alone?”
That’s the premise of Xengame’s Interstellar Flames 3d action game. The game has been anxiously anticipated ever since Xengames released the first screen shots showing [...]

For the Blackberry fan, the dream mobile device would be a Blackberry with more features. For always-on-the-go worker, voice input and control is a plus. For the worker who “lives” in Outlook, complete Outlook compatibility and functionaliy is a must. Some others say color is indispensable. Others “need” a traditional keyboard.
The article, by Dan McDonough, Jr. of Wireles.NewsFactor.com goes to show that the core needs of each user may be radically different. It points to two important truths: There probably will never be [...]

The Bush administration announced yesterday that the Pentagon has agreed to move it’s protected spectrum for military communications, allowing a wider aread of the spectrum to be used by telecommunications companies to offer enhanced services such as streaming video and high-speed internet access to phones, handheld computers and other mobile devices.
This eliminates one of the road-blocks to 3g wireless services as well as ultra-wideband networking, both of which suffered from possible interferrance with military communications [...]

Descent for Pocket PC is a port of the Parallax Software game for the desktop PC. Currently, it is only written for ARM processors, so it should run on any iPAQ, and Pocket PC 2002 machine, and probably on the XScale machines as well. The Pocket PC program requires two files from the desktop version so you’ll have to have an official copy of the desktop version to play it.

Graeme Philipson hates PDAs. He’s never found one that does PIM functions as fast as he can do it with low-tech pencil and paper. It’s a complaint I’ve heard more than a few times.
My father does quite well with a “little black book” the like of which he’s been using since the 1940s. If he ever got a PDA, after I picked myself up off the floor, I’d ask him what else it did that convinced him to buy it.
That’s the point I think Mr. Philipson missed: PDA’s don’t just keep your [...]
Psion, famous for their high-quality UK made palmtops, has been forced to re-open their production lines in producing the famous Psion Series 5MX palmtop because of high demands. The Psion Series 5MX is the only modern palmtop in their “consumer” series that is created in UK. The Revo series was created in China by another manufacturer called Flextronics, and were not manufactured by Psion themselves. Since high-demand hit the UK, it has also hit the United States also, forcing Psion USA to ask for more units from its UK based home. They are now in stock, [...]
Microsoft want’s to encourage the adoption of 802.11b (WiFi) wireless networking. The company isn’t satisfied with the rate at which WiFi products are being rolled out, particularly in light of the fact that its Tablet PCs specification include WiFi connectivity.
It’s also good news to Pocket PC owners with built-in or add-on WiFi. With Microsoft’s backing, we may soon be able to connect our PPCs to our X-Boxes, re-program our intelligent thermostats, or shut down the garage light from our living room couch.
The WiFi [...]

IBM and Palm are expected to announce today that they have signed a pact which allows IBM sales people to sell Palm hand-helds to business customers starting this fall. This begins to make good on a claim Palm made earlier to ally with three technology companies that also have experience selling to large businesses. IBM is the world’s largest technology company and has one of the largest global sales forces in the industry.
IBM and Palm had a previous deal whereby IBM sales people could sell Palm hardware. This deal also includes working [...]
I sometimes wonder if it pays to turn my computer off everynight as I do. In the morning, I sit there in my computer chair for the (what seems to be) long wait for my computer to boot up. Other members of my family choose to leave it on all the time, but I am more power-concience.
Well thanks to this article, I will no longer turn my computer off at night. Instead I will use the ‘hibernate’ option available in Windows versions 98 SE on, which brings computer power consumption down to about 2.3 watts, the same as when it is off. Hibernate [...]

A simple survey of images on your Pocket PC or on this web site would show that a vast majority of them are .JPG format. It’s also the format used in virtually every digital camera and supported by every digital image scanner. That’s significant because Forgent Networks, a US video network software company claims to own the patentent on .JPG compression. Forgent, in a press release on July 11th claims it “has the sole and exclusive right to use and license all the claims under the ‘672 patent that implement JPEG in all ‘fields of [...]
