Low-end smartphones are constantly getting cheaper, and even in the last year we have seen fairly dramatic price cuts as Firefox OS becomes a more viable choice and chip manufacturers contribute more to the industry. ARM is saying now in a slide at their Tech Day that it believes a smartphone priced at $20 could only be months away.

Considering the rock bottom pricing of this fantasy phone, don’t expect too great a showing specs-wise. The phone will feature a single-core ARM Cortex-A5 CPU and EDGE data on the Android operating system, which we can’t imagine using, but the target audience is not quite us.

If ARM is correct, we could see more third-world countries able to connect to the Internet, which is never a bad thing. We will have to see how this plays out over the next couple months, and whether ARM’s 20 dollar smartphone will indeed be a reality.
