Tablet enthusiasts are looking forward to this fall when Microsoft is believed to launch, together with its OEM partners, their line of Windows-powered tablets (slates and convertibles) which will bring a very close and deep integration with the desktop OS.
While the platform for Intel-based computers will be called Windows 8, “Windows RT” will be the name of the operating system which will be running on ARM-based devices. It will “only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors and will help enable new thin and lightweight form factors with impressive battery life.”
Devices running Windows RT will also come with the Office suite pre-installed but the applications running on Windows RT will be those built using the WinRT development environment. Whether this will turn out to be a smart move from Microsoft is up to the market to decide, based on the user experience these devices will be able to offer.
