Mobile Tech World has figured out a registry hack in Windows on the desktop that will let you see a Windows Phone 7 as a removable disk drive. You’ll only have access to the Music, Pictures, and Videos folders which will only be recognized by the Music & Videos hub and Pictures hub. In other words, you can’t drag/drop things like PDFs or Word Documents to the device and have them show up in Acrobat Reader or the Office Hub.

In order to enable the media storage in Windows:

- Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu

- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSB (and not the other ControlSet01 or 02 if you have them) and then search for ZuneDriver

- It should bring you to something like: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumUSBVID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_006&27ffd631&0&0000Device ParametersWUDF

- Click up one level to the “Device Parameters” key

- Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1 <- this enable Windows Explorer to show the device when pluged in

- Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0

- Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1 <- this enables Windows Explorer to detect the device

- You can also change EnableDefaultAutoPlaySupport but it didn’t seem to do anything.
