Microsoft’s We’re In Brings Google Latitude Functionality to WP7

Planning a get-together, a night on the town, and could use some help coordinating things, keeping track of where your friends all are? If you’re on Android or iOS, Google Latitude seems like an obvious enough solution, but that’s precious little help for Windows Phone 7 users. Enter Microsoft to the rescue, with its just-released We’re In app.

We’re In takes more than a little inspiration from Google Latitude. To start with, you invite a group of people from your contact list by using the app to send each a text message. Once they accept, you’ll be able to see everyone’s location on a map.

To communicate amongst the group, each member can set status messages viewable by the rest. When you initially set things up, you can set a time limit for how long this group needs to stay on top of each other; after your pub crawl is over, We’re In will automatically drop everyone from the group, ceasing to share location information between them.

For now, We’re In is only available for Windows Phone 7, but Microsoft says it has plans to port the app to additional smartphone platforms.
