We just took a look at the ever-growing list of features to expect in Mango, the next major update expected for Windows Phone 7, including song-recognition and navigation with voice guidance. Our next big chance to learn some more about what Mango has to offer may be just around the corner, since Microsoft just started distributing invitations to a preview event that will “lift the curtain on the major release of Windows Phone”.
We’re going with the assumption that a “release of Windows Phone” means a software update, though we suppose you could read it as “release of new Windows Phone hardware”. Still, in the latter case, we’d expect some sort of partnered event instead of just Microsoft on its own. The planned date for the event, May 24, is shared with a function Samsung has been planning. We had been thinking that could be Galaxy S II related, but perhaps it’s timed to work with this Microsoft event, possibly revealing new Mango-running WP7 hardware while Microsoft shows off the software side of things on its end.
Even before May 24, there’s the possibility for more Windows Phone news on the horizon. Nokia’s got an event of its own planned for May 17 in Greece. What it’s got there is anyone’s guess, and could range from Symbian to WP7, and could focus on old hardware in new markets, or maybe something new altogether. Whatever does happen at all these events, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
