Microsoft Fights Marketplace Piracy, Deletes App From Phones

Piracy is slowly becoming a problem on Microsoft’s platform with many (all) Nokia-specific apps being ported to other devices made by different OEMs. We’re not sure whether there are several degrees for piracy but Microsoft was quick to act on the following.

Turns out a popular navigation software which normally would be available commercially in the Marketplace has been pirated; not only that but the XAP file for the app has been resubmitted (and accepted!) to the Marketplace, being made available for free.

Microsoft not only removed the application from the Marketplace but has also sent out a command to wipe the specific app off of the phones it has been installed to. The account which uploaded the commercial application and made it available for free has been threatened with $40,000 in damages.
