Microsoft today confirmed that the first Windows Phone-powered handsets from Nokia will launch with version 7.1 “Mango” aboard. In fact, the company’s Andy Lees revealed at a Manhattan press event that Redmond engineers were already working with Mango-equipped Nokia hardware at corporate labs. Since Mango was promised for an early fall rollout, we can assume that the the launch models from Espoo will be available soon after that, probably in time for the holidays.
While Microsoft will spend the next several months doing a slow reveal of the rest of the new Mango features, Nokia looks like it’s ramping up for the release of a long-awaited, MeeGo-powered device, the N9 / N950. It will be interesting to see if MeeGo has a future in Finland after all eyes turn to the company’s premiere WP7 lineup.
