The Dell Venue Pro, in our opinion, is the most powerful Windows Phone 7 money can buy right now. It’s built like a tank, and it performs fantastically. There’s been some misinformation as to the amount of RAM the Venue Pro has, with estimations ranging from 256MB to 512MB. Unfortunately, Dell doesn’t publish the RAM figure of the Venue Pro, and all Windows Phone 7 devices have no way of displaying the amount of RAM through the on-device Settings (as was the case with legacy Windows Mobile). But thanks to a handy free app from the Marketplace called Device Info, we can finally see some critical info. As you can see from the above image, Device Info clearly shows 225MB of RAM (which really equates to 256MB as the operating system uses some of the RAM). What’s remarkable is that the Venue Pro is able to exhibit such a high level of performance with a relatively low amount of RAM.

This begs the question: why does Dell’s high-end Venue Pro not have as much memory as the other Windows Phone 7 launch devices? It could be a defect, as a recent thread on Dell’s support page has some members complaining of regular device crashes, plus suspicion that the Venue Pro was supposed to ship with 512MB of RAM but that some units are showing around 256.

Or, more reasonably, the lower-than-thought RAM could just be a cost-savings measure. Windows Phone 7 runs smoothly with 256MB of RAM (assuming the Device Info app is accurate), as we’ve seen through our tests of the Venue Pro, so why would Dell add more?
