It looks like Microsoft’s WindowsPhone 7 platform will at least get third-party IM support, something that was missing from the KIN Windows Phone release, now discontinued, on Verizon Wireless. The IM client, called CrossTalk, promises multi-client support, integrating AIM, MSN, Facebook Messenger, GoogleTalk, and BlackBerry Messenger.
In addition to Windows Phone 7 support, CrossTalk will soon be coming to Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry devices.
Hopefully, the app will implement push notifications, which would allow for alerts to come through and be pushed onto the device even if the client isn’t running as Microsoft would not support multi-tasking for third-party apps. Another key element of push notifications is that without the app being on all the time, users would be able to conserve battery life on the device while still being able to receive timely notifications.
In addition to iOS/iPhone and Windows Phone 7, Research in Motion is also looking to bringing push notifications to the BlackBerry platform via standardized push APIs.
The CrossTalk app is slated for a late September/October release timeframe for iOS and Windows Phone 7.
