Compal Communications Chairman Ray Chen has announced today that the company has just signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft for the use of Windows Phone 7. Compal Communications is an original design manufacturer (ODM), typically a company that designs and manufactures a product which is specified and eventually branded by another firm for sale.

In its Windows Phone ODM state, Compal Communications will be manufacturing Windows Phones for Nokia and Acer, which will start shipping in the last quarter of the year 2011. Acer recently became a new Windows Phone partner — along with Fujitsu and ZTE — and its smartphones will be built, just like with Nokia, by Compal Communications.
