Barnes & Noble eReader Update With Lots of New Features

Remember the Barnes & Noble eReader software that comes with the T-Mobile HD2? It just got an update that brings a lot of new and exciting features! In the Library view, you now have a grid option so that you can see many more book covers at the same time. You’ll also notice a new section at the top called “Lend Me.” That’s where you can recieve book loan offers from your friends with Nook eReaders or other B&N eReader devices.

BNreader bookmarks

Now you can bookmark pages and easily jump to them from the Bookmarks menu. In order to bookmark a page, tap the upper right corner of the page in reading view. A little dog-ear turned corner will appear indicating that the page is now bookmarked.

BNreader dictionary

If you tap and hold on a word in reading mode, a “Look up in Dictionary” button appears.

BNreader settings

In the Settings section there are lots of new options as well. You can down choose themes for the display of books in reading mode, as well as create a night mode that may make the books easier to read in the dark. Oh, and it supports opening PDFs now, too!

BNreader lend

In the book overview section you’ve got quick access to the table of contents and bookmarks, while also having a new feature for sharing the book with your friends. The “Tell a Friend” button will let you email info about the book to some one, while the “Lend to a friend” button will let you send the book to some one’s “Lend me” section. Unfortunately, if you have no BN eReader friends or that particular eBook is not enabled for lending, the loaning features seem to be greyed out.

BNreader search

There’s a nice search feature here as well.

It’s really nice to see that Barnes & Noble is continuing to put some effort into their Classic Windows Mobile eReader application. This should be a bit surprising since most of us expect Windows Mobile to be completely dead with Windows Phone 7 is released in the coming months. Hopefully, this means we can expect a really nice B&N eReader for Windows Phone 7 later in the year, but if you’re still using the great HTC HD2, you’ve also got a nice eBook reader with some great features.

Are you using an HD2 with the B&N eReader or a Nook eReader? Are you happy to see the “Lend Me” feature in Windows Mobile?

(Thanks to Jason M. for the tip.)
