The image on the slide above was apparently prepared for last fall’s Nokia World conference, where Microsoft’s Albert Shum discussed its content with attendees. With our report on what to expect for Windows Phone 8 now a hot topic, including mention of a couple new screen resolution options, there’s rekindled interest in possible new form factors for the platform’s hardware. A lot of that speculation has turned its attention on the Nokia slide; will we really see Windows Phone hardware in all those designs?

When discussing the slide, Shum spoke in very broad terms. He described the future plans for a variety of shapes and sizes of Windows Phone hardware as “something we’re still working on”, rather than anything that had been committed to.

There’s a lot of effort today going in towards trying to extract just as much data as possible out of that image; sites are taking their guesses at exact screen measurements of the featured devices. While it’s certainly possible that each silhouette up there represents a specific model or design type under consideration, it seems just as likely that this is a generic depiction of where the platform could find itself someday, supported on all shapes and sizes of hardware under then sun.
