HP’s just-announced Veer manages to squeeze a full smartphone experience into one of the tiniest packages you’ll find, making it look great for someone who wants a powerful phone that won’t take up all their pocket space. Obviously, when you’re shrinking hardware down to this level, certain sacrifices need be made; consider the downsized 910 mAh battery. HP may be going too far, though, as the Veer will have neither a USB nor headphone jack, requiring the use of external magnetic adapters.

The adapters use their magnets to stay in place while electrically connecting to the phone over spring-loaded pins, just like the power cord on a MacBook. Both connect to the same port on the Veer’s right side, meaning you’re out of luck if you want to use headphones and a USB cable simultaneously.

We can see what HP was thinking, as you don’t need USB to charge the Veer if you use the magnetic induction of the Touchstone, and you could always swap your tried-and-true earbuds for Bluetooth headphones; of course, that’d be one more gadget you have to remember to keep charged. It’s just that these adapters look positively bulky when snapped on to the streamlined Veer, and are simply begging for you to lose them. We’ll have to wait for a tear-down before we pass judgement, but was there really nowhere to fit the jacks internally, HP?
